Associated Term: Fall 2022
Levels: Undergraduate, Graduate, Professional

West Lafayette Campus
Lecture Schedule Type

Learning Outcomes: This course is designed to introduce students to basic data analysis techniques. Coverage will include the application of probability distributions such as the normal, the t, and the binomial, sampling distributions, basic statistical inference methods, analysis of variance, applied linear regression and data modeling techniques, decision analysis, and quality control methods. Our main goal is to instill the basic quantitative and data analysis skills needed by managers in modern business. These skills will help managers to understand and carry out data-based decision making, risk assessments, and policy making and to work effectively with data analysis teams to improve all aspects of business performance. The course focuses on the student as a user of statistics who needs a minimal understanding of mathematical theory and formula derivation. Modern data analysis is done using computers and various types of sophisticated software. Therefore, to most effectively introduce management candidates to its techniques, we will emphasize software applications (with Excel) in this course. Full instructions for using Excel will be provided in the course materials and in classroom demonstrations.
Required Materials: The course will use the text, Modern Business Statistics with Microsoft Excel, 7th ed., by Anderson, Sweeney, et al., published by Cengage. This is the same text used for the prerequisite course, STAT 30301. Homework exercises will be assigned from this text. If they have not done so already, students are strongly encouraged to get the book by purchasing it through Cengage Unlimited. This will give students the e-book, with its access to homework datasets, and access to MindTap, Cengage’s online learning platform. A hard-copy of the text will be put on reserve in Parish library. Two other traditional statistics texts will also be put on reserve in the Parrish Library for those who wish to have additional reference materials. They are: Anderson, Sweeney, Statistics for Business and Economics; & Moore, McCabe, The Practice of Statistics for Business and Economics
Technical Requirements: Access to Microsoft Excel is required to complete homework assignments. Excel is typically a default installation on PCs, can be purchased and easily installed on Macs, and is available on all campus ITaP lab Windows computers and through Purdue’s Office 365 Portal.
