Learning Outcomes: A: For those students who are anxiously reading this text, and wondering what the future holds, not just in English 106, but in their college education, their careers, and their lives; a moment to stop and breathe is both wise and necessary. Most of the students in this class have undoubtedly experienced many changes in their lives in the past several weeks, and students currently reading this text can be certain that this course is not designed to add confusion or stress to a student’s already bewildered mind. Instead, this course is designed to offer students a refreshing and enjoyable approach to learning a skill that is essential to ALL aspects of life—effective communication. The way we approach and create communicating with others is composition. This syllabus is, in fact, a form of communication. Communication is at the core of what it means to be human. Whether the term “communication” is used to describe facial expressions, phone conversations, advertisements, or academic papers; all communication maintains similar, and therefore learnable, characteristics. This course will educate students in the vocabulary used to describe these characteristics, and how the elements of composition can be used to argue, or advocate, a writer’s beliefs. In order to learn the characteristics of effective communication, our class will step outside of the realm of traditional essay writing to encompass an understanding of composition that will serve students far beyond the classroom. While this course does seek to educate students on effective academic writing, the course also aims to produce students who are confident in their creative ability to compose effective communication. Students will gain this creative confidence by studying text and media, and through the practice of visual design, editorial writing, digital communication, and research. Creative and effective writing, as many students realize, can be used in many ways. Students with effective communication skills will excel in research essays common in courses within their major. Graduates with effective communication skills will produce resumes and cover letters in such a way that employers will excitedly offer interviews. Alumni of Purdue with effective communication skills will know how to work with coworkers and become leaders in their respective fields. Citizens empowered by effective communication will become active advocates for change in their communities. This course will teach students a creative intellect that they can use to survive, and even thrive, in the world around them. Students in English 106 will acquire their knowledge through a variety of readings, discussions, and projects. We will be working out of the text Compose, Design, Advocate, which promotes an understanding of composition that extends beyond the written essay. We will also work with the various media available in our everyday lives including posters, advertisements, commentaries, and web-based content. In this course we will begin by analyzing the composition process. A big part of learning effective communication is identifying the process used to achieve a specific goal. Learning the various elements of a process allows people to develop and alter their own communication processes, thereby empowering them to be effective communicators in their lives and careers. I hope students of this course will find our work to be challenging, insightful, and fun—welcome, and enjoy the course!
