ENTM 32820 - Medico-Legal Entomology
Credit Hours: 3.00. This course explores the main topics covered under medico-legal entomology (MLE). Specifically, the course will focus on the role that insects play in abuse, neglect, and death investigations. Students will experience rearing and identifying the major forensically important insect groups associated with medico-legal investigations. Finally, students will gain an appreciation of the scope of MLE through the analysis of two mock cases.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Establish an understanding of how insects are in used in legal investigations. 2. Define and defend the types of insect evidence presented in abuse & neglect cases. 3. Define and defend the types of insect evidence presented in death investigations. 4. Explain how insects are used to answer various questions in legal investigations. 5. Collect, rear and identify forensically important specimens. 6. Identify forensically important specimens down to family, genus or species level. 7. Demonstrate and explain proper collection techniques from decomposing remains. 8. Demonstrate and explain proper rearing techniques for forensically important insects. 9. Experience medico-legal entomology. 10. Compare and explain the life cycle of forensically important flies. 11. Analyze two medico-legal scenes. 12. Compose forensic entomology case reports.
