STAT 51700 - Statistical Inference
Credit Hours: 3.00. A basic course in statistical theory covering standard statistical methods and their application. Estimation including unbiased, maximum likelihood and moment estimation; testing hypotheses for standard distributions and contingency tables; confidence intervals and regions; introduction to nonparametric tests and linear regression. Typically offered Fall Spring.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Understand the basic asymptotic theory including consistency and convergence in distribution. 2. Know how to perform some elementary statistical inference such as estimation, confidence interval and hypothesis testing. 3. Be familiar with the maximum likelihood method to make statistical inference. 4. Know how to judge the quality of different estimators. 5. Know how to perform optimal tests of hypotheses.
