Identify common characteristics of primary literary genres (e.g. prose, poetry, drama) as exhibited during one or more time periods in German-language cultures. 2. Discuss (in German) selected literary works that are written in German in respect to their main themes and to devices that help writers convey the texts' meaning, such as symbolism, metaphor, irony, and allusion. 3. Compose (in German, with the aid of a dictionary) analytical essays that examine the relationship between the content, style, and sociohistorical context of selected literary texts.
