Learning Outcomes: 1. Understand the role and position of literature in the Soviet Union. 2. Situate the works they read in their historical and political context. 3. Understand the relationship between writers, the Soviet state, and the means of disseminating texts. 4. Improve understanding of the way literary works function through various artistic devices. 5. Improve ability to perform close readings of literary texts. 6. Increase ability to write analytical papers supporting a thesis. 7. Increase ability to conduct and present independent research. 8. Confront the philosophical and ethical questions raised by these works.
