Learning Outcomes: 1.  Distinguish descriptive from prescriptive linguistics. 2.  Explain how the history of the slave trade affected the development of African American English. 3.  Compare and contrast features of African American English with other varieties of English and other Creole languages. 4.  Describe features of African American English using tools from the linguist's toolbox (syntax, phonology, semantics, dialectology). 5.  Provide examples of important legal cases concerning the education of African American children. 6.  Explain how African American culture has helped shape modern American English. 7.  Identify language prejudice in popular media.
