LA 32500 - Planting II: Ecological Landscape Performance
Credit Hours: 3.00.  Study of plants and their integration with other site features (e.g., water, landform) to increase sustainability. Plants will not only be studied for their aesthetic and spatial uses in the landscape, but also their ecological functions and temporal dynamics. The relationship of plants to site planning, ecosystems, and human use will be explored. Various scales, sustainable practices, and landscape performance will be considered. Class trip may be required. Students will pay individual lodging or meal expenses when necessary.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Develop an understanding of the relationship between plants and ecological systems and processes, and their relevance to sustainable design. 2. Have a clear understanding of the concept and measurement techniques of landscape performance and related ecological principles 3.  Select suitable plant material and create effective compositions appropriate for a variety of site conditions and achieve different ecological objectives 4. Demonstrate an awareness of sustainable landscape plants utilization constraints and complexities, in aspects of aesthetics, cultural and social, ecological, and economic. 5. Incorporate multiple spatial scales thinking and be able to apply that into design and planning processes.
