Learning Outcomes: 1. Gain a detailed historical understanding of the development of ancient Greek and Roman science, especially medicine and astronomy, against the background of traditional beliefs in magic. 2. Ability to appreciate and intelligently discuss major issues in ancient science as they relate to both ancient and modern views of what is "rational" and "scientific". 3. Ability to identify specific examples of the influence of ancient science on later western scientific theory and practice.
