Advanced methods for theoretical seismology; elastodynamic theorems; seismic source theory for earthquakes and explosions; scattering of plane waves and spherical waves; physics of layered and radially varying media; seismic attenuation; asymptotic ray methods and finite difference methods for the calculation of seismic waves in laterally varying media. Offered in alternate years. Prior course work in advanced differential equations, physics, and chemistry of the earth is required. Typically offered Spring.
