Classical thermodynamics including the first, second, and third laws, spontaneity, chemical potential, phase equilibria. Introduction to quantum mechanics: postulates of quantum theory, linear operators, Heisenberg indeterminary principle, Pauli principle, orbital and spin angular momentum. Simple quantum systems such as particle-in-a-box, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom. Symmetry. Atomic and molecular spectroscopy. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer.
