Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify the major components of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) hierarchy and terms associated with the PSTN. 2. Calculate A/D PCM encoding and decoding, recognizing the information loss of the process. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of line coding and zero-suppression techniques used in the PSTN and long haul transport. 4. Apply probabilistic methods to determine single and multiple bit error probabilities on a link given a bit error rate (BER). 5. Demonstrate an understanding of medium characteristics, modulation and multiplexing techniques, physical layer framing structures used in the PSTN, wireless and data networks.
